the chest by liu dan.
i saw this at the China inside out exhibition curated by my professor Jerome Silbergeld.
This image was scanned from the catalogue.
The story of this painting goes like this if I remember it correctly. This chested belonged to the artist’s friends in london. I think they were going to throw it out, but Liu Dan decided to wash off the paint on the chest to reveal the true color and grains of the original material. He then spent around 4(?) months painting this piece and almost went blind after it was finished.
He does a lot of delicate paintings. At first I thought this piece was a photograph printed on a traditional Chinese paint scroll and didn’t pay much attention to it. But I was pretty shocked after hearing the story from my professor.
I will scan some more stuff by him later.
